Author's Notes: Happy birthday,
remusseverus! I hope you like this. It's weird how nothing ever comes out the way I plot it in my head before. Nevertheless, I hope you still like it and had a fabulous birthday like you deserve! (This is also a taste, though it most likely won't be exact, of my plot bunny I have in my head for a chapter length Snape/Hermione so I think that's how my drabble plot bunny got distorted.)
"What do you want?" he asked. He voice was pitched softly, but there was a hard edge to it, showing that he was an unbending man.
She tilted her head and stared up at him, her brown eyes shining with affection, concern, and loyalty. "I want you to admit it to me."
"Admit what?"
She slid her arms around him and rested her head on his chest. He was stiff in her arms, but it didn't detour her. "Admit you need me," she whispered against his chest. She hated being vulnerable, and she was grateful that due to her position in his unwilling arms she couldn't see his face or he hers.
"I don't need anyone." He grabbed her arms and peeled her arms from around his waist roughly.
She glared up at the stubborn man. "You need me," she whispered insistently.
He didn't say anything, just met her glare with a murderous one of his own.
"You need me," she insisted again, holding eye contact as she reached up and stroked the side of his face.
He quickly pulled his face from her reach. "I don't--" he started.
"You need me. You just hate needing me. Or anyone. Merlin, Severus, you may actually love me." Her voice caught in her throat as she looked up at him, tears gathering in her eyes at the look of hatred and denial in his eyes.
"Love you?" he repeated with pure distain in his voice. "I can't love you... Mudblood."
The insult knocked her backwards as if he had slapped her. She stumbled backwards creating distance between them. "You don't mean that," she whispered, her voice broken and soft.
"Granger, what else could I mean? Love you? You're a Mudblood; you're beneath me."
Suddenly a strong feeling of anger swamped over her, making her glare up at him with renewed vigor. "Damn you, Snape. You are a stubborn, insolent man!"
"Yet you are standing here, trying to get me to confess my supposed love for you. You're stupid too." It wasn't a question; it was a fact.
She swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and shook her head. "You saved my life."
He smiled at her. It was a sick smile from a sadistic humor he found in her words. "I saved many people, Granger. It was war."
"You saved me."
"Granger, do you not understand the happenings of war? Did Hogwarts or your prior Muggle education fail to teach you such?"
"Stop it!" she screamed, his cruel words making her physically ill.
"Stop what? Telling the truth? You're a Mudblood, a silly little girl. If I had had a real choice you'd be dead now."
She glared at him, feeling hurt and anger both at his words. "How could you say that?"
"I only say the truth, Granger. Only the truth."
"That night..."
"That night was a mistake. In the middle of war. A mistake I wish I could take back."
She glared at him. She couldn't believe the bravo he had to say these things, to dismiss their night as a mistake. She turned around to leave, but stopped. Slowly she turned back to the man and asked, "Can I give you some advice before I leave?"
"If you must, Granger," he allowed in a slow and deliberate voice.
"I must. My advice is not to tell a woman you love her, during even a night you will see as a mistake, if you don’t." She didn't wait for his response. She left the Spinner's End, and slammed the door behind her departure creating an echo.

Date: 2006-12-17 09:04 am (UTC)I see you see my point now. I get Draco on days that end with Y; I am both Lee and Sam in the way they are to Kara to Lee (did that make sense?); you may have Jim all to yourself. At least until I watch the Office and decide otherwise.
