Title: Painful Distance
Words: circa 440
Rating: PG13
Characters/Pairings: Haji/Saya
Warnings: spoilers for entire series just to be safe
Prompt: "our distance and that person" table
Summary: Haji watches Saya from afar, both wishing he could be near her and hating that he would have to be there when she choose to fight.
Being away from her was killing him. It was a slow death that would actually never end. He'd never reach the finality of the process, because he couldn't leave her. No one could replace her in his life – the way her eyes shined a brilliant brown when she was happy and that deadly red when she was choosing to fight.
Haji wandered around the town, knowing she was here. Saya was close. Something stronger than their blood had called him to this nondescript town a few weeks ago, telling him that she was there waiting for him. But every time he happened to spot her, there was no familiar recognition in her eyes that he had grown accustom to seeing. He supposed that 30 years of sleeping and months with her family – yes, he had watched her and the other three members interact enough to know that they were truly a family – had assisted her on forgetting him. It hadn't been her choice.
No matter what Haji did, he knew he could never forget her.
During her 30 year long rest, he had traveled the world, seeing sights and attractions and meeting people, but he couldn't put her out of his mind – ever.
Their distance was painful, though, and kept twisting his insides the longer the time apart was prolonged.
Suddenly, Saya ran out into the street, making Haji's heart twist painfully. She was so beautiful and carefree now. Her friend ran after her, calling her name. Saya didn't slow; she just laughed. More than anything, Haji wished he wouldn't have to help take her out of his safe and kind world into the world of blood, death and fear. She'd choose to fight, because to Saya, there was no other choice.
Her laughter was like feather-like kiss to Haji, making him step toward her. Just one step. The distance didn't close as she kept running down the street, heading away from him to a destination he didn't know. Her musical laughter floated to him, and he wished that that person – Saya, the girl of his dreams who had claimed his heart and loyalty long ago – wouldn't have to choose to fight. But he knew what her choice would be even if she didn't know yet.
The distance was shrinking, and while Haji wanted her close by, he knew that he couldn't approach her yet.
"I'm right here, Saya," he whispered softly to her, knowing that she couldn't hear him. "No matter the distance, I'm always with you."
A moment later, she turned a corner and he followed suit, disappearing into the crowd.

Lovely!
