"Hello Santa!" A familiar voice called from where the line was.
Severus stiffened in response. He turned to face the next person in line and a grown woman stood there. "You’re too big," he informed her coldly.
His elf pressed her lips together to keep from laughing. "Um, she's not. There's no real... rule..."
"She paid you off, didn't she?" he accused dripping with acid.
"Of course I didn't!" the woman said, dropping on his lap. He groaned with her weight. She glared at him, retorting, "That's not how you were reacting last night."
"Last night I wasn't in public."

"Shush, Santa. I need to tell you what I want for Christmas," the woman said, her voice light once again and flashing a smile to the children and parents in line.
"A mind? Since you’ve clearly lost yours. Or maybe--" Severus said, his face red under his fake bread.
"I have a mind, dear," she cut him off with mischievous smile. "I want..."
"Just out with it, woman," he said, knowing she was deliberately stalling.
"For Christmas, this Christmas not in a few years, I want to become Mrs. Severus Snape." Her voice had dropped to whisper the name.

"Hermione," he said, his voice low enough no one else would hear it. "This is not the place."
"Oh? I think this is the only place you can't run from the discussion!" Hermione informed him, her face set with determination.
"Hermione, please, I'm at work."
"You're a department store Santa, Severus. And I know why you are. And I don't care."
He looked at her with curiosity. "About what?"
"A ring, a wedding. Gods, I'll elope!"
"Is that why you think I got a job here?"
"They told me."
"Who did?" Anger surged through him directed at the nameless "they."

"They -- Draco, Harry even mentioned it," Hermione said in an off-handed manner.
"Why would I tell Harry anything?" he asked. His voice was hard and angry.
"I don't believe you did. Ginny told him."
Severus moaned. "They know nothing, dear. Get off my lap and go home."
"No!" She practically yelled her denial, making the people in line look at her with shock who were waiting to see the Santa. Lowering her voice once again, she said, "I'm not leaving. Or else I am leaving."
"What does that mean?"
"That means, you either elope with me, or I'm leaving you."

"This is not the place," he said.
"Choose or I'm gone." She was ashamed to hear her voice crack with her words.
"You don't mean that," Severus tried to placate her.
"Like hell I don't!"
"Hermione, dear, calm down. I'll talk to you after work."
"No." She raised her voice where everyone could hear. "And hey, you're Santa. Can't you make my Christmas wish come true?"
"I'm not a miracle worker," he said in a harsh voice.
She looked at him with stark pain from rejection in her eyes. "That's your answer then," she said, her voice devoid of emotion.

She ignored his hand as she slipped off his lap. "Next," she told the elf who was looking at her with sad eyes.
"Hermione!" Severus called from his chair, his hand reaching out.
She pushed his hand away. "Santa's not a miracle worker, you said. That means I can't have my Christmas miracle." She chose her words carefully, trying not to let their audience understand.
"Hermione," Severus said again, his voice almost pleading. "Don't go like this."
She turned to look at him, shrugging. "Bye." Her adieu was soft; the tears had already gathered in her eyes wanting their escape.
