Title: Death of the World
Words: circa 600
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: Misa-centric
Warnings: suicide
Author's Notes: This is for [livejournal.com profile] project_memes. She won second place in my fandom meme. She requested a Death Note fic as a prize, and since we aren't shippers for series, it's a Misa-centric and dark.
Summary: Misa hates the world..

"Misa-Misa!"

Misa turned slightly to see a little girl running toward her, grinning. She quickened her pace, hoping to avoid the child. He didn't want to sign an autograph or greet a fan politely like her manager told her too. She hated fans now. They were just a reminder of how the world had fallen.

Light died a year ago, but she couldn't get over her grief. It was overwhelming, overpowering her. She stepped into the elevator and the doors slid closed as the girl reached her. Misa shrugged her shoulders, as if sorry she had missed the girl, but inwardly, she was thankful. Ever since Kira's death, which was well reported in the media, the crime rate of Japan had tripled, surpassing what it was even before Kira's first appearance. It was sickening. No one was scared of the police like they had been Kira; knowing that death was no longer punishment like it was when Kira was active and seeking peace in the world people committed crimes like it was the right thing to do. It was common.

She went to her hotel room, intend on calling her manager and telling him she quit for the final time. She had tried to before, but always talked her back into doing just one more photos shoot. She couldn't take it anymore. Her life was empty with Light. She had loved him unconditionally, knowing his goal was what was best for everyone and thankful he had killed her parents' murderer.

She closed her room's door, leaning against it for a moment before she braced herself for the phone call. It wouldn't be easy. She knew it, but she knew it was right. She couldn't take it anymore; she wanted to fade into obscurity.

Pushing back from the door, she walked to the couch and sat down, grabbing her cell phone from her purse. She pressed the numbers, but didn't hit the send. Her determination failed her, making her feel weak and unhappy. Tears began to roll down her cheeks as she thought of the state of the world without Kira. It was the death of the world the moment Kira had breathed his last breath in.

The world had fallen apart and made it hard to just live anymore.

She closed her eyes, falling back against the cushions, and sighed heavily. Living in this world would be a chore; it would be near impossible to continue to put on her happy face to the public when she knew crime as around every corner.

"I can't do this anymore," she whispered to herself. She felt lonely and cold. Wrapping her arms around herself, she remembered the first time she had laid eyes on Light. It was love at first sight, making it easy for her to continue her goal to help him with the enormous task he had taken. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders, and he barely seemed perturbed by it.

He was easy going, yet when it came to being Kira, there was no better than Light. She knew that first hand. When she pretended to be Kira to try to take the heat off Light, it had been nearly impossible. Light knew it from the moment she started, but he forgave her and understood her actions.

She rubbed her arms, closing her eyes against the pain. Thinking of Light only hurt, yet she couldn't help herself. He was part of her. The best part.

Standing up, she fished the gun she now carried for protection out of her purse. She glanced at the phone sitting on the couch and sighed. It was too much. Her manager would never let her go without a fight, and she couldn't take living in this world anymore. It was dangerous and unkind, unlivable at best.

Placing the pistol to her head, she closed her eyes as she pulled the trigger back, welcoming the darkness that engulfed her immediately.

It was brilliant... I wish I hadn't read it yet -- but it was brilliant.

Now, do I need to finish watching the show?

Yay! There are so very few well-done Misa-centered fics out there, and this is the best!
