Lily glanced downward, avoiding Remus's eyes, and leaning towards James purposely. He draped his arm around her shoulders possessively and pulled her firmly to his side as if subconsciously daring Remus to say something about it. But his friend didn't know that Remus wanted to say something; Remus wanted to tell him that Lily was a woman, not a trophy to show off or an object to possess. She was a beautiful woman.

The talk continued around him, but Remus found himself lost in his own thoughts instead of paying attention. He remembered his first impression of Lily, her kind words and quiet nature. It didn't last long, of course, once she found that she really did belong there despite her Muggleborn heritage. She turned out to be a sweet, but opinionated, young woman.

Lily's laughter brought Remus's attention back to the group. He reached out automatically to touch her, but dropped his hand in midair.

"Moony are you there?" Wormtail said giving him a weird look.

Remus cleared his throat. "Yeah, I'm here."

Lily leaned over and gave Prongs a peck on the cheek. "I have to go." She started to move away, but Prongs grabbed her hand and pulled her back, kissing her. She leaned out of the kiss and quickly went up the stairs to the girls' dormitory.

Padfoot leaned over and whispered with an air of conspiracy, "Tonight's a full moon." He grinned wickedly at his three friends. Wormtail was practically bouncing in his seat with excitement.

Their talk couldn't be heard in the midst of the other conversations, but they made sure they whispered softly.

Remus never liked the idea of his friends' putting their lives in danger for him, but he didn't have the heart to say no. Secretly, he liked running around with his friends at Hogsmeade at night; it made the nights fun and something to look forward to rather than dread.

Remus sighed. "They are coming for me at seven."

"Like always," Prongs agreed with a grin.

"We'll be there at nine then," Padfoot said. His eyes shone with his excitement.

Remus nodded. The bell rang and Remus got up, "Time for class."

---
The sunset didn't set until after nine that night; Dumbledore smuggled Remus out of the castle at seven, though, just to be safe. He waited in the Shrieking Shack for the moon to cause the change; the transformation was painful but the waiting was agonizing and prolonged.

Hours later, well after nine, his friends weren't there and he was the animal he became under the full moon's influence. He was supposed to stay in the Shrieking Shack, caged away from the rest of the world, but he always went out and explored the village during the night, reveling in the freedom.

Remus roamed down the center of the village, encountering no one and having no one accompanying him. The freedom was greater than most nights without his friends to keep him in line, and his human feelings were overpowered by his animal instincts. He hunted humans to harass, bite, or just frighten, but for some reason the street was deserted.

The hours ticked by, getting closer and closer to sunrise when he could transform back.

---
"Sorry mate, there was no way we could have gotten there," Prongs apologized the next morning, giving Remus a friendly slap on the back. "All the professors were roaming the halls."

"It was as if they knew," Wormtail piped up, his voice fearful of being caught.

Sirius laughed loudly. "Don't be stupid; they haven't got a clue."

Remus nodded. The fact they hadn't been there hadn't changed a thing.

He watched as Lily gracefully sat in the chair next to Prongs. "Hello."

"Good morning," Prongs said.

The Great Hall was filled with the talk of the students packed in for breakfast, so everyone had to talk a bit louder than normal.

"How are you this morning, Lily?" Remus asked politely.

"Fine." She yawned. "I couldn't sleep last night."

"Why not?" Prongs asked, but Remus noticed how insincere his question was.

She shrugged her delicate shoulders. "I don't know… I just couldn't…" Her voice trailed off, her thoughts left unfinished.

Wormtail started to complain about their homework assignment in Herbology, and the topic of Lily's sleep was dropped immediately.

Suddenly, Remus's head began to pound. Closing his eyes, he reached up to hold his head automatically. Blurry images and colors flashed in his head, but he was unable to make out what they were.

"Moony, you okay?" Prongs asked from across the table.

Remus opened his eyes to see all four sets of eyes looking at him with concern. His heart began to beat a bit faster with Lily's green eyes focused on him with worry.

"I'm fine, just a headache."

"You should to the hospital wing then," Lily said. As an afterthought she offered, "I'll go with you."

He nodded slowly, waiting for Prongs to tell her she couldn't go for some unknown reason. When Prongs didn't say anything, they set off.

---
The halls were relatively empty as they walked to the hospital wing in silence. "Thanks for coming with me," Remus said into the quiet.

"It’s no problem," Lily said in an off-handed way.

This time the silence was awkward.

Lily sighed. "Hopefully she has some headache potion." She seemed to just want to just want to feel the silence rather than actually had something to say.

She reached out suddenly and grabbed Remus' arm, stopping him. He turned to her slowly, confused.

"Can I talk to you… alone?" she whispered her voice full of uncertainty.

"Sure."

"Last night… something happened," she whispered. Her green eyes were filled with fear, making him reach out and put a comforting arm around her shoulders. "Some of my friends and I snuck out after curfew and went to the Whomping Willow. We heard from some Slytherins that you could just hit a special knot on the tree and it will stop attacking…"

Remus' breath caught in his throat; fear pumped through his entire being as she whispered her tale.

"We heard noises, and found a tunnel, so we… well, we went down there--" She paused as her words stilled in her throat. Clearing her throat and taking a fortifying deep breath, she continued, "We got to the end of the tunnel and do you know where it led?" Remus didn't trust himself to answer, so merely didn't acknowledge the question. "It led to the Shrieking Shack!" she exclaimed. "There was someone in there… making the noises… a howling… a growling… something… it wasn't human," she whispered.

"What was it?" Remus found himself whispering in terror.

"A werewolf."

The two words hung in the air around them; Remus felt like he couldn't breathe any longer.

"It was a werewolf, and you know what's really weird?" She leaned toward him to whisper her question.

"No, what?"

"There was a Gryffindor scarf on the floor… as well as school robes." Her green eyes stared at him with fear as she told him her observation.

Remus cleared his throat uncomfortable. "There was?"

She nodded. "The others ran. I watched… When it turned to look at me… when it turned to look at me, I swear it knew me."

Remus' pounding head hurt's throbbed. The blurred images suddenly cleared up… Lily was peeking out from the trap door, her face alight with terror as she saw the monster he was. The part of his mind that was still human had recognized her and then stored the memory away until this moment, when he had to face it that she knew now.

"Do you know… do you know who it was?" he whispered, not looking at her anymore. He couldn't bear to.

Her small hand suddenly reached over and lifted his chin so he was looking at her. "It was you, wasn't it, Remus?"

Her eyes were no longer filled with terror, but instead compassion. Remus felt the words coming out before he could stop them. "How'd you know?"

"The Prefect badge."

Questions rushed around in his head. He wanted to know if she was afraid of him now, or if she hated him. She was never prejudice before, but sometimes things change.

She bit her lip as she watched him. Her eyes were still kind and compassionate, unflinching as she waited for him to react.

He swallowed. "So what now?"

A mouth curved up into a smile. "Nothing. I just wanted to make sure…" She began to walk again as if unfazed by just what she had just heard about him.

"Doesn't… this change… anything… everything…?" he asked awkward, not moving to follow. Her reaction was so small that he couldn't believe it.

She turned back to him, her face smooth and expressionless. "No, it doesn't change anything. Remus, you are still the same person as you were before."

Her words -- her words said so simply and meaningfully -- struck him hard. He reached out and touched the side of her face gently, stroking her cheek as she looked at him with affection. She leaned into his hand slightly, a smile playing on her lips again.

Suddenly, he was pressing her against the wall, kissing her in a way that he had always wanted to yet never had to nerve to. The back of his mind screamed that she was James' girlfriend.

He was slightly taken back when she opened her mouth and her tongue swept in his mouth. His hands cupped her face, and her arms slid around his waist and held him tightly. His mouth slanted over hers again and again, tasting her.

After a long moment, she gently leaned away and put her hands on his chest, pushing him away from her slightly. He pulled back and looked down at her. Her face was flushed beautifully and her lips red from his kisses. She looked utterly feminine. Lust rushed through him, making him wish she had never stopped him yet making him glad she had so it hadn't gone any farther than they had.

"Remus…" she whispered, her breath fanning his face.

Quickly, he pulled back, moving so there was an arm's distance between their bodies again. "I'm sorry," he apologized quickly. He didn't know how to begin to explain to her why he had kissed her, and he wasn't sure he was ready to hear her explanation of kissing him back.

She shook her head quickly. "No, no. It's not your fault." She bit her lip. "It was mine."

"No it wasn't," he said, sighing. "Come on, I still need my headache cure." He began to walk back down the hall, unsure what to say.

He heard her footsteps following him, but they didn't speed up to meet his stride. The silence that engulfed the pair was uncomfortable. After he had gotten his cure, which was no longer needed it seemed, they walked to class together in quiet. When they reached the door, Remus reached out and laid his hand on Lily's arm, stopping her.

"Thank you."

She smiled at him a confused smile. "For what?"

"Accepting me."
