Victoria watched the flame flicker, casting cruel shadows over the grounds.
We almost had forever. We had eternity ahead of us, looking brilliant and dark.
The other vampires left the spot after putting out the fire. The burners made sure all that was left of their subject was now mere ashes on the ground, being scattered by the wind.
Almost doesn't count, she thought viciously as she started the fire again and watched the ashes burn until there was nothing left and the flame put itself out.
"Goodbye James," she whispered into the silence, deep remorse clawing at her gut.
