"You know why they are called crushes? Because you will be crushed in the end. Always."

Her older sister's words lingered in her mind as she watched him now. He was so beautiful and brave. Not to mention, kind and generous. The way he placed his hand on the small of the other girl's back as he gently guided her into the doorway made their audience's heart lump in her throat. She longed, despite the age difference, to the one that his hand was guiding, to be happy and content – and most of all, safe – just by his touch.

She closed her eyes, imagining herself as the girl she was watching. Her mind reeled with a soft emotion that resembled jealousy. She wasn't angry at the girl who was in the place she wanted, but she didn't feel any affection or like toward the girl either. Her feelings toward this stranger were numb – complete apathy.

Opening her eyes, she felt a small tug of a smile on her lips abruptly. Training her eyes on the boy again, she felt a shiver pass through her entire body. A shiver of anticipation, jealousy, and… something else.

Leaning down smoothly, he whispered something into the girl's ear. It looked, from her vantage point, as a lover's whisper of sweet nothings. Overcome with the desire to be the one who could hear those words, she pushed back from the wall she was peeking out from behind and turned away.

Suddenly, as if she hadn't heard her sister's words echoing in her head since she realized that this was her first, official crush on a boy, tears stung her eyes. Normally, she felt satisfied just to watch him, to daydream of him and being with him, but right now, after watching him and that girl from afar, it didn't feel like enough.

The rest of her sister's words continued moved through her head:

"So, protect your heart. Crushes aren't meant to last; in the end, you only get hurt. But you will find the person you love and who loves you back. But don't dwell on crushes. Crushes are nothing. They come and go. Trust me, you can't escape crushes. You just got to… look to deal with them!

Then her sister had wrapped her in a tight, but short hug. She grinned like a fool. Now she understood those words. Her sister had been right. She'd get over her crush soon enough, and find another. Didn't people have crunches on celebrities? They would go nowhere, and people still had them. Was that the same thing as dwelling on them or was it okay to be fascinated by someone else – even someone you couldn't possibly in a million years have?

Her sister had answered that question, too. She answered it by her actions. She had crushes – on boys and celebrities – and it was okay. Cracking a smile and the stinging of the tears just disappeared. This was normal.

She was a teenager after all - well at least she had turned into one two months ago by age. She was allowed to like guys.

Glancing over her shoulder, she kept smiling softly. He was there with another girl, and it was perfectly alright that he was probably going to star in her dreams that night.
